Viirus GUEST: Writing of Disaster

By Jenni-Elina von Bagh and working group

A theatrical exploration of life and destruction

Writing of a Disaster is a choreographic melodrama and post-farce. In the work destruction and life go hand in hand, creating expressive cracks between joy and tragedy. The work is an artistic adaptation of Maurice Blanchot’s philosophical work “The Writing of a Disaster” (Finnish translation: Tuhon kirjoitus / Viljami Hukka, 2024).  Can a new beginning emerge from the ashes of destruction, and how is it found?

In the piece, three experienced performers explore the comedy of failure—the fringes of our existence and the dark spot, posthuman forces, the delicious balance of horror and laughter. The performers draw from the body’s own wandering, eventful journey, born of impractical, ridiculous, and self-imposed challenges. The work constantly finds new ways to express itself, to get tangled up, to fall, and to pull itself together again—to reflect on the wonder of life, on the fact that we are alive.
